Clumping Cat Litter: Getting Rid Of Your Cat's Waste

Cat litter was developed in the late 1940s. The inventors used clay instead of the usual sand in the litter boxes. Clay is a better moist absorbent than sand. This cat litter is also known as clumping cat litter. Clumping cat litter is usually made up of bentonite clay that is sold in granulated form. Upon contact with water, the granules will clump together and combined with the cat's waste will form a solid mass for disposal.

This mass of clay, however, cannot be flushed down the drain like the flushable cat litter. It can easily get stuck inside the plumbing system and become more of a problem to the pet owner. Extra care is also taken when using the clumping cat litter since it can pose a danger to the pet cat itself, especially kittens. Kittens are more likely to swallow cat litter than adult cats. Since it is in solid mass form, it can suffocate the kitten or the cat to death.

Also, the entire contents of the litter must also be changed about every five weeks to prevent the build-up of bacteria. Unlike the flushable cat litter, which makes use of disinfectant and cleansing solutions, the clumping cat litter only sticks cat feces together but does not offer disinfectant and cleansing properties. It can, however, also eliminate the odor of ammonia from the feces.

When this cat litter solidifies, there are traces of the mineral quartz that are usually present. It is the presence of this mineral that sometimes misled pet owners into thinking that it is a sand cat litter in gel form, which is not true. The sand cat litter or silica cat litter is not available in gel form although a mixture of clay and sand sometimes will do for a cat litter mixture.
